Happy February! I was recently at the Western Inter-University Geosciences Conference (WIUGC) hosted by UBC the first weekend in January, and just wanted to say how impressed I was by the student-run organizational committee headed up by Nikki Marsh. There were around 100 students in attendance from most of the Western Canadian Universities, but the greatest out-of-town participation was from the University of Calgary, and thus, WIUGC 2014 will be coming back to Calgary. The students were particularly impressed by the massive slinky waves Aaron Foyer (Talisman) and Mike Smorodin (Apoterra) were creating during the Industry Fair… word to the CSEG Outreach Program, you will need a new slinky for your next tradeshow.
Reminder: GeoSkills 2013
GeoSkills 2013 will be taking place at the Metropolitan Centre in Calgary on February 6th. GeoSkills is an event which is organized by a joint committee of students from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and the University of Alberta, and industry professionals whose goal is to bring quality speakers, students and industry professionals together for a day of learning, lectures and interaction between these groups.

Family Day Food Drive: Target Data
From all of us at Target Data, we hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season, and we wish you all the best in 2013.
The continued generosity of many people and businesses throughout the holiday season helps the many food banks across our country stock their shelves and help those in need. But the needs do not stop there. In March of 2012, 882,188 people turned to food banks, an increase of 2.4% over 2011, and an increase of 31% over 2008. In Alberta alone, food bank usage from 2008-2012 has increased by 59.4%. (Statistics from www.foodbankscanada.ca)
The increased usage, and specifically the spike in March of 2012 points to increased needs in spring, and we would like to help as best we can.
From late January and leading to the Family Day weekend in February, Target Data will be collecting donations of money or food for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank. For a list of the most needed items at this time, please go to www.calgaryfoodbank. com/consider-giving-food.
If you would like to make a donation, or if you would like to place a bin in your office, please contact your Target Data representative and arrange for pick up: Jeff Kary (jeff@target-data.com), David Shuffler (david@target-data.com), Darrel Jackson (darrel@target-data.com), Debbie Barron (debbie@target-data.com) or Vic Urban (vic@target-data.com) or via phone at 403.294.0868.
Thank you all for your continued generosity, and for helping support the causes we at Target Data believe are important to our community.
