The objective of the CSEG is to promote the science of Geophysics, especially as it applies to exploration. In addition, the CSEG has a mandate to promote fellowship and co-operation among those persons with a common bond and interest in geophysics.
These words are taken directly from Article II of the bylaws of the CSEG.
The society’s true strength and adherence to these objectives lie with its members. The organization has two paid full time staff only, but the vast scope of work that is fulfilled daily by its members to accommodate the mandate of the CSEG is truly remarkable.
Last year, from a membership that has over 2100 registrants, there were more than 100 volunteers that sacrificed their time to fully achieve the objectives of Article II bylaw for the benefit of all members..
To promote the science of Geophysics, our member volunteers now orchestrate a variety of opportunities for its existing membership to educate and learn from. These include:
- Joint CSEG-CSPG-CWLS Convention
- The RECORDER
- Luncheons
- Lunchbox Geophysics
- CSEG Continuing Ed
- CSEG Foundation
- CSEG Distinguished Lecturer Series; and
- DoodleTrain
To promote the science of Geophysics for our current student members and encourage future enrollment in geophysics within our universities by today’s grade school students, our member volunteers staff the following:
- Scholarship Committee; and
- Outreach
Ultimately, it is our corporate members that benefit from the successful completion of our graduating student members.
To satisfy the mandate to promote fellowship and co-operation among the membership, the CSEG volunteers have, for many years now, offered three yearly social functions that the vast majority of our members have participated. These three functions are:
- Doodlebug golf tournament
- Doodlespiel curling bonspiel; and
- Ski Spree
To promote fellowship among our young geophysicists that are transitioning into the workforce, the volunteers host the following:
- Junior Geophysicists Forum
So, to reiterate, the vast scope of work that is fulfilled by its member volunteers to accommodate the mandate of the CSEG is truly remarkable. The executive recently held the Volunteer Appreciation evening to recognize all the individuals that have contributed so unselfishly of their time in any capacity over the last calendar year, 2006. I dedicate this column, this month, to those volunteers, past and present. I’d like all the members, honorary, active, student, and corporate to acknowledge and applaud the efforts of these key individuals and their employers for giving them the time to fulfill these important roles. To a job very well done! Thank you on behalf of all the members.
