The oil and gas industry has been completely reshaped over the past three years. Although the worst of the budget cuts, layoffs and bankruptcies appear to be over, there is a lingering worry about long term commodity prices, market access for Canadian production, and burdensome regulatory environments. A more stable footing for the industry is on the horizon as 2018 gets underway. Budgets will continue to be spent cautiously and geoscientists must live within these constraints while continuing to find and develop the resources necessary to power our economy. These issues have been front of mind for the GeoConvention 2018 committee.

GeoConvention 2018 technical content has been retooled into a new format, distilling the sessions into more impactful themes:

  • Building Strong Foundations – Technical Fundamentals and Applications
  • New Horizons – Novel Technological Tools and Advancements
  • Unconventional Plays – Advancing Understanding and Profitability
  • Managing the Risks of Unconventional Development
  • Conventional Plays and Frontier Basins
  • Challenges and Opportunities for the Canadian Energy Industry

Thanks to the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG), Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), Canadian Well Logging Society (CWLS), our presenters, exhibitors and generous sponsors, GeoConvention 2018 will continue in its drive of being the best integrated geoscience conference in Canada.

The main goal of the 2018 organizing committee is to focus on high quality technical content and attract the most impactful speakers. The high quality and relevant technical content makes the value of attending GeoConvention 2018 self-evident.

Technical

In the fourth convention held under the formal partnership agreement between the CSEG, CSPG and CWLS, the and the, GeoConvention 2018 will host a wider variety of technical content, integrating new topics such as GeoModelling, Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, Petroleum Engineering and Completions Technology in addition to play-specific talks on the Duvernay, Montney, Spirit River, frontier and conventional plays.

Under the guidance of the GeoConvention Board, the volunteer committee has embarked on an overhaul of the technical program with a focus on key industry themes and sub-themes to ensure the most topical content possible.

In addition to the best-in-class integrated geoscience content, GeoConvention 2018 will also host discussions on the diversification of the energy industry, global carbon management and utilization, professional development and workplace and culture diversity. GeoConvention 2018 promises to position you and your team for greater success by introducing in-depth discipline-specific discussions, integrated case studies and technological advancements.

The technical committee is also pushing GeoConvention 2018 to be the year of posters due to the popularity of the format. The team extended a special posters-only abstract deadline to target all individuals interested in presenting their work on the exhibit floor in a poster format, yielding the largest poster program we have ever hosted.

Networking and Luncheons

GeoConvention 2018 will continue to offer networking opportunities throughout the conference – utilizing society-sponsored luncheons, coffee breaks and the Monday and Tuesday networking with the exhibitors. GeoConvention continues to provide all our attendees with the opportunity to reconnect with past colleagues and meet new ones.

New Initiatives

To help insure the best return for our exhibitors and sponsors, complimentary drink tickets will be included with every delegate pass as we deliver value through the networking nights on the exhibit floor. We are very grateful to our exhibitors, who invest a lot to be with us, and we want to continue ensuring strong return on investment by providing opportunity for meaningful discussions on the exhibit floor. Additionally, the on-site concession will be back for 2018 to promote further networking opportunities and to give attendees a convenient lunch option should they not be joining us at one of the luncheons. We will also be bringing the posters back onto the exhibit floor and hosting a Showcase area where our supporters will be able to address the exhibit floor audience with the latest developments their companies have been working on, new technologies and applications of upgraded workflows.

The GeoConvention Mobile App will be back as a resource for all delegates and attendees to plan their day, gain insights to our technical content and presenters and to engage in the conference through in-conference games and prizes.

Sponsorship and Exhibits

GeoConvention will continue to focus on the return our supporters achieve from joining us – be it through sponsorship, exhibition, or both, we are committed to continue growing, adapting and building on our successes as we work with all of our supporters to build their brands, market their technologies, or introduce their workflows to our expected 3,500 attendees.

Partner Society Return

The GeoConvention team, from the board to the committee, are dedicated to ensuring return to our partner societies and the geoscience community through new initiatives, an emphasis on the technical program, cooperation with affiliate societies and a focus on maximizing the benefits our supporters realize by joining us. The team will continue to work tirelessly to keep bringing the best integrated geoscience content to Canada with a razor-sharp focus on high-quality technical content, meaningful networking opportunities, supporter return and education.
