Is it Spring yet? End whine… (it is -36°C with the windchill as I type.)

I was just out at the 41st Doodlespiel weekend in Banff, and just wanted to say thanks to the Doodlespiel Committee for all of their hard work. Roger Edgecombe and his committee put together a fantastic event, and the over 400 CSEG members who participated (I think/know) had a great time! It’s a lot of work, so please know that it is appreciated. Big congrats to Sterling Hansen and his team for winning the overall A event title too...

SAVE THE DATE: T-Wave Golf Tournament

The Fifth Annual T-Wave Tournament will be taking place at the Inglewood Golf Club on Monday, June 24th. This half day scramble tournament is a way for CSEG members to spend a relaxed afternoon with their colleagues and friends on a beautiful golf course, in a non-competitive tournament geared for all golfers: men and women, low and high handicappers.

Registration and tournament sponsorship information will be released soon. Stay tuned through your CSEG email updates.

SAVE THE DATE: Women in Seismic Golf Tournament

The Women in Seismic (WiSE) Golf Tournament was started in 2000 to allow women in the Seismic industry an opportunity to network and socialize with their peers. Our entrants are from all parts of the industry: geophysicists, geologists, technical staff, processors, copy houses, management, sales and support staff from service companies. Recently, the tournament has involved raising money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation (Breast Cancer). This year we are donating all proceeds to both Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. With the support of corporate and personal donations, WiSe has raised over $60,000 in the past few years.

Please keep Thursday, September 12th, 2013 open for the WiSE Golf tournament. We will be holding the tournament once again at Fox Hollow in Calgary. Registration and sponsorship information will be released soon. If you would like to volunteer on the WiSE Committee, please contact Joanne Poloway at joanne.poloway@sigmaex.com.

DOODLESPIEL Results!

With 96 teams and over 425 participants, another successful Doodlespiel has drawn to a close. By all accounts, all participants thoroughly enjoyed the second year being back in Banff.

The weather was favourable for Friday’s outdoor activities, with Jordan Vandean winning the $500 draw to the button contest and “Team Ohler” (the guys in bath robes) winning the $500 human curling contest. The prize for the best costume was awarded to Team Ohler. These four guys in the bath robes wore those bath robes everywhere, even to the bar at night, and were clearly committed to the spirit of the event. The “shot” broom may have contributed to their keeping warm and not noticing the drafts!

The prestigious A Event was won the team of Sterling Hansen. This team of young upstarts entered the weekend bound and determined to dethrone the defending champion rink of Larry Herd, and they delivered on their promise by defeating Team Herd in the A Event Finals.

A list of all event winners is provided below.

  • A Event = Sterling Hansen’s Team
  • B Event = Andy Morris’ Team
  • C Event = Jim Brack’s Team
  • D Event = Armin Schafer’s Team
  • Holplug Winner = Bill Mansell’s Team

As Chairman of the 2013 Doodlespiel, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the sponsors of the 2013 Doodlespiel. Without the continued support of the industry, this great event would not be able to continue. What other event offer access to over 400 individuals from all sectors of the industry? The continued participation of so many individuals speaks to the success of the event. It was great to see so many new faces in Banff this year. The younger generations will ensure the continued success of the event, while the older generations reflect on their own glory days of the event. A special acknowledgment to Les Werle, who at 80+ years young, was curling in the B Event and illustrates that the Doodlespiel spans all generations!

While everyone else nurses their liver back to good health, the Doodlespiel committee has already begun planning for next year’s event and looks forward to seeing everyone back in Banff in 2014.

Roger Edgecombe,
Doodlespiel 2013, Chairman
