Happy November! As we have a LOT of updates this month, I will keep this short. ☺
Educational and networking opportunities abound this month...
Safe travels to anyone travelling to Las Vegas for the SEG this month: educate and entertain yourselves well. And, back in Canada one week later, thanks to Doug Uffen and his committee, the Doodletrain will take off.

Save the Date! 2012 Junior Geophysicists Forum
The annual Junior Geophysicists Forum will be held on Tuesday, November 13th (during DoodleTrain Week). This is an important networking event for all geophysicists as it gives recent graduates and students valuable insights into career options. This year’s featured speaker will be Laurie Bellman, and the event will be held at the Hyatt. Registration information will be announced shortly via the CSEG newsletter.
Sponsorship is limited to E&P companies and is greatly appreciated. For sponsorship information, please contact Mark Lukwinski at mark.lukwinski@cggveritas.com.
Save the Date! GeoSkills 2013
Just a quick heads-up that GeoSkills 2013, which is an educational and networking event organized by and for Geo Sciences students at the University of Calgary, University of Alberta and Mount Royal University, has been calendared for Wednesday, February 6th at the Metropolitan Centre in Calgary.
All industry professionals are encouraged to attend the networking event in the evening hours. Registration details will be out shortly.
On August 23rd-25th, the 60th annual CSEG Doodlebug Golf Tournament was held at Kimberley’s Trickle Creek Golf Course. Over one hundred golfers along with another sixty plus spouses and guests took part in this year’s event. Great weather (thank you Mark Watson), a terrific golf course and spirited, but friendly competition made for an exceptional tournament. Congratulations go to this year’s “Mr. Doodlebug” Alan Starkoski.
In addition to the golf, there is a plethora of social events that take place over the weekend. This year’s featured guest event was a guided hike around Eimer’s Lake and was enjoyed by many of the guests. The weekend’s festivities are always concluded with a theme dinner on Saturday evening. Being the 60th anniversary, the committee felt the “Psychedelic 60s” would be an appropriate theme for the event. Hippies, Flower Children, Go Go Dancers and several incarnations of Jimmy Hendrix could be found on the dance floor grooving to the tunes. By all accounts everyone had a blast.
There has always been a charity component to the Doodlebug. This year’s charity was Direct MS, in honour of Rob Shugg who lost his battle with MS in September of 2011. Rob was a well-respected member of the geophysical community in Calgary and a longtime supporter and participant of the CSEG Doodlebug. Through direct donations, charity chip and long drive competitions, winnings from the Chucks and the Saturday evening charity raffle, over $7,500 dollars was raised for Direct MS and presented to Rob’s wife and Doodlebug Guest of Honour, Karen Shugg.
The 61st annual Doodlebug Tournament will be held once again in Kimberley on August 22nd-24th 2013.

Women in Seismic Golf Tournament

Thanks again to the 120 women and the Sponsors who participated in the 12th Annual Women in Seismic Golf Tournament at Fox Hollow Golf Course. The weather was amazing this year, and so was what we accomplished!
We raised just over $23,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which supports initiatives in Calgary to assist people affected with cancer. The money we donate from this tournament goes specifically to Breast and Ovarian Cancer in Calgary. This is a great cause and they truly appreciate your time and generous donations. $5000 of this donation was made by the owner of the Fox Hollow Golf Course.
We had a Sponsor on every hole and a few 19th Hole Sponsors as well! Great job Kristy! Thank you to our Sponsors. Without their generous support we would not have been able to generate this much money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Thanks go out to Imageco Solutions, Santos, Surveyza, United DataWyse, Target Data, GeoTir, Microseismic, Earth Signal, Fugro, Divestco, Edge Technologies, Copyseis, Pulse, Sigma, Sensor, IHS, Outsource Seismic, CGGVeritas, Arcis, Inova, Tesla, Olympic, Rife, Freehold Royalties and Explor!
Thank you to Pam Larson working her tail off and getting all those amazing prizes! Every team walked away with a prize and a few lucky ladies got a great Raffle or Silent Auction item as well.
Thank you to Holly Hood, who made all the signs, place mats, and pamphlets. It was also her idea to do Rockets for Mulligans (I think a lot of those never made it to the cart!).
Thanks also to Divestco (Amanda Mansell and Danielle Harrison) for doing registration, name tags, and the follow up survey. Thanks to Jennifer Sawatzky as well for help the morning of registration.
Thanks also to Fox Hollow Golf Course for their continued support for this event. The staff, both on the course and in the kitchen, give 110% to make sure that all participants have a great day. They go out of their way to make sure this is a first class event.
I am excited to keep improving this tournament, so please take time to respond to the survey. Watch the RECORDER for information on the 13th Annual Women in Seismic (WiSe) Golf Tournament in the New Year!
Thanks again to all attendees and everyone who made the event a success!
Joanne Poloway,
Chair of the Women in Seismic Golf Tournament
41st Annual Doodlespiel!
As Chairman of the 2013 Doodlespiel committee, I am excited to let everyone know that Doodlespiel will continue its long history in Banff!
The 2013 Doodlespiel will be held on January 24th-27th, 2013. The committee is already working to ensure that the 2013 event will carry on the success of last year's return to Banff. However, because of a conflict, the committee has had to make alternate accommodation arrangements. For 2013, the Banff Caribou Lodge and the Fox Hotel will have rooms blocked for all curlers.
Please visit the Doodlespiel website (www.doodlespiel.com) for more details about the 2013 event as well as registration and sponsorship forms. It is the participation of members and sponsors that makes the Doodlespiel a continued success. I look forward to seeing everyone in Banff.
Cheers,
Roger Edgecombe,
Doodlespiel 2013 Chairman
