Alright, all you skiers and curlers out there, this is your edition. Registration for the Doodlespiel and Ski Spree open soon, so mark your calendars! Ski season is approaching fast; here are some tips to get you prepared:

  1. Buy a pair of gloves and immediately throw one away.
  2. Clip a lift ticket to the zipper of your jacket and ride a motorcycle fast enough to make the ticket lacerate your face.
  3. Soak your gloves and store them in the freezer after every use
  4. Drive slowly for three hours – anywhere – as long as it’s in a snow storm and you are following an 18 wheeler.
  5. Find the nearest ice rink and walk across 20 times in your ski boots carrying 2 pairs of skis, accessory bag and poles. Pretend you are looking for your car, sporadically drop things.

Junior Geophysicists Forum November 3, 2009

The Junior Geophysicists Forum (JGF) started in 2005 and is an informal mixer for geophysicists of all experience levels and students majoring in geophysics. This gives students and junior geophysicists an opportunity to network with established geophysicists. The event is intended as a technical networking event. All geophysicists or students enrolled in a university geophysics program are invited to attend. Registration is open to all geophysicists whether they are junior, intermediate, senior or retired. It is open to geophysicists working in all aspects of the oil and gas industry whether they work for an E&P company, processing company, acquisition company or are consultants. Attendance in the past has ranged from 175-200 geophysicists. We expect attendance to exceed these numbers for the next JGF.

This will be our 7th JGF and will be held on November 3, 2009. Attendees must confirm their attendance in advance. Registration for the event will open on October 21st on the CSEG website. More details on the venue and time of the event will also be available at that time. Articles on the past JGFs are available on the CSEG website.

In order to facilitate networking between the participants, there will be an Icebreaker game with a geophysical theme and a guest speaker. Our guest speaker this year is Ian Dawes from Talisman Energy.

The JGF is a golden opportunity for students to meet more established members of the geophysical community. We urge all students to attend.

Our sponsors for the next event are: Nexen Inc., Devon Canada, BG Canada, ConocoPhillips, Hunt Oil Company of Canada, PennWest Energy Trust and Petrobank Energy and Resources Ltd.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information please contact Carmen Swalwell (405-560-8431) or Nanna Eliuk (403-532-0022) or email the JGF committee at jgf@cseg.ca.

See you in November!
