Happy March People! A compatriot asked me recently if I was going to change the focus of the Grapevine now that I am writing for it. After thinking on it for a while, I think I am going to expand one of the areas Gina focused on. You will notice that in addition to general industry news (when it’s sent my way), we will be featuring heavily submissions from the CSEG and other industry organizations that really help to develop and foster the idea of community amongst our membership. (It’s not because I tend to volunteer for several of them either… it’s purely altruistic… really!).

2009 CSEG Family Ski Spree

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2008 CSEG Family Ski Spree! We are already looking ahead to the 2009 event and the committee has a few important announcements to make.

First, we are blessed by having phenomenal interest in our event, but we are cursed by a size limitation at our venue. We usually manage to get everyone into the event who wants to be there, but unfortunately there are always a few who won’t get in. The good news is that the Fairmont Hotsprings Resort is expanding. With that expansion comes the hope that in the future they will be able to accommodate larger groups for functions such as the Ski Spree. So, for 2009 make sure you register early as this event tends to sell out within a week. Look for registration information in the November 2008 issue of the RECORDER.

Second, we are changing the dates of this event for 2009. We want to move the Ski Spree a little further away from the Doodlespeil so that we can spread the fun out a little more. The 42nd annual CSEG Family Ski Spree will be held February 27, 28, March 1st, 2009.

Lastly, we would like to sincerely thank all of our sponsors who help make this event a tremendous success. Without your support the Ski Spree wouldn’t be the fun filled weekend we all look forward to every year.

If you have any questions, concerns, comments or suggestions please feel free to contact Patrick Tutty at 264-8722 or patrick@earthsignal.com.

Thank you all, see you on the hill in 2009.

2008 GeoSkills Day

As per Adam Flynn, Geophysics Undergraduate Students’ Society Executive, University of Calgary: The first annual GeoSkills Day was held on February 6, 2008 in downtown Calgary. This day long event was targeted towards geoscience students from the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta and SAIT, as well as current professionals who were either recent graduates or mentors.

GeoSkills was well attended by about 80 students and about 30 professionals. The event consisted of a range of professional talks by former CSEG and CSPG luncheon speakers and was geared towards students. It was an opportunity for students to obtain an overview of the energy sector through a variety of different geological and geophysical topics, as well as gain an understanding of future job opportunities that may exist for them in the industry

Participants were also treated to a lunch at The Metropolitan Centre and an industry mixer that was held in the evening. The evening mixer was well attended by both students and professionals and was open for all to attend. This gave a chance for students (especially the younger ones) to network with professionals about their experiences, goals, and ambitions.

GeoSkills was made possible with support from the CSEG, CSPG and APEGGA as well as industry sponsors such as Husky Energy, RPS Energy, Geophysical Services Incorporated, Divestco, Kelman Technologies, BP Canada, EnCana, Nexen and Sigma Explorations.

2008 Doodlespiel Results
