ENFORM

ENFORM is offering several courses in fall 2007 related to safety in geophysical (seismic) operations. Some three day courses are held at their training center in Nisku, Alberta, others are in Calgary. Many of these courses are the result of CAGC initiatives to provide industry safety training and certification in several areas of operations. The Buried Facilities Locator (Seismic) course highlights one example of the use of geophysical instruments (for metal or pipeline detection) in near surface investigations. The following details are from http://www.enform.ca/91.

Buried Facilities Locator Training (Seismic)

Location: ENFORM Training Centre, Nisku, Alberta.
2007 Dates: Sept. 17-19, Oct. 15-17, Nov.19-21
Cost: $625.00 + GST

This three-day training course is designed to prevent excavation damage to buried facilities by providing Locators working in the geophysical exploration industry with the necessary skills and knowledge to accurately mark and identify facilities in a safe and effective manner.

The information provided in training will provide Locators with an understanding of basic locating principles and ensure a minimal competency in providing locates through hands-on training. The hands-on training will emphasize the correct and proper use of locating equipment to accurately locate buried facilities, markings, and documentation.

This training will also familiarize Locators with the industry accepted safe practices and regulatory requirements in support of seismic operations to ensure a safe and accurate locate of all buried facilities.

Course topics will include:

• Fundamental Principles and Introduction to Locating
• Buried Facility Locating Techniques
• Locating Safe Work Practices and Regulatory Awareness
• Operating Locating Equipment
• Locating and Marking Buried Facility for Geophysical Locators.

Earth Signal Processing’s 4th Annual Winter Golf Tournament Champion is Revealed.

With the conclusion of the 2007 golf season the coveted Earth Signal trophy was passed to Dave Wardlaw in the 4th Annual Earth Signal Processing Winter Golf Tournament. The thrilling match, played on August 20, 2007, between Dave Wardlaw and Roger Edgecombe, concluded with Dave Wardlaw holding the trophy.

The epic battle took place at the Banff Springs, on a scorching, blistering, hot day, where prior to the match excited fans fried eggs off of the tarmac, and both competitors fought hard to find their spit, a dry shirt, and their games. One older fan remarked, “It’s hot, damn hot, I’d hate to putt those greens, they’re as fast as your garage floor”. But both competitors were cool out of the gate, remaining tied after the first two holes. It was the scrappy Edgecombe that drew first blood with a net birdie on the third to go one up in the match. Wardlaw, not to be outdone pared the fifth, sinking a tricky 10 foot left to right breaking putt on the treacherously fast greens to tie the match. Edgecombe came back on the next hole with a brave chip, and his own remarkable putt from 23 feet to take a one up lead. And so the battle ragged in the unrelenting heat. Wardlaw took the 8th, Edgecombe the 9th, Wardlaw the 10th, Edgecombe the 11th, Wardlaw the 13th, and then using some fine Kitchen golf, Wardlaw got into Edgecombe’s head and stole the 15th. For the first time in the match, he was one up. With the pressure up and the heat on, Edgecombe the ever-gusty competitor, grabbed a fresh beer, fresh shirt and a little trash talk of his own, birdied the 17th hole and for the fifth time in the match, tied things up. On the par 5, 18th hole, with all fans eyes upon them, both competitors hit perfect drives right down the middle of the parched, brown fairway. Both second shots, being played for position, were again struck straight and true. The match had come down to this, wedges from 100 yards. Wardlaw being first to play, crisply hit his wedge right over the flag stick but a little too far, finding the deep rough. Edgecombe came up pin high but to the left, coming to rest in a near impossible lie. Wardlaw went to 7 feet on a nice chip, with Roger hitting a miracle to 35 feet. Roger stroked a fine putt to 10 feet, but missed the follow up. Wardlaw going for the win narrowly missed his 7 footer after his ball hung on the lip, and stubbornly refused to drop.

The sudden death was decided on the first overtime hole when Edgecombe had to chip back to the fairway after an errant tee shot left.

This final match was a great display of skill, sportsmanship and kitchen golf. Congratulations to both participants.

Dave Wardlaw, already runner up previously in this annual tournament, (is that sand in your pockets Wardlaw) will have his name put on the trophy that remains in the Earth Signal office. He receives his own trophy to display to friends and family. Roger Edgecombe recently married, received a gift certificate to Victoria’s Secret. The item he purchased went over well.

CGGVeritas and OHM

CGG Veritas is delighted to announce that it has entered into a strategic operating alliance with Offshore Hydrocarbon Mapping plc (“OHM”) under which both companies will jointly develop the global market for Controlled Source Electromagnetic imaging (“CSEM”) and capitalise on seismic and CSEM integration opportunities.

In addition, CGG Veritas has entered into an agreement to acquire 15 per cent of OHM’s share capital at a price of 240 pence per share.

These agreements are conditional on OHM’s shareholders approval.

Both companies will benefit from this operating alliance as it will provide CGG Veritas with access to the CSEM technology, and OHM with an immediate access to the marketing and operational network of a world leader of the seismic industry. Research has shown that there is potentially highly valuable information to be gained from the combination of seismic and CSEM datasets as these technologies make complementary measurements which, when properly combined, can lead to quantitative measurement of important rock and fluid properties such as permeability and hydrocarbon saturation. CGG Veritas believes the combination of seismic and CSEM data will be of significant value to oil companies in managing their reservoirs and in enhancing recovery from their subsurface reserves.
