SAGEEP ’93 RECORDS RECORD ATTENDANCE
The 1993 Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems (SAGEEP) was held April 18-22 in San Diego, California, and attracted a record 311 conference delegates.
The purpose of SAGEEP is to present to engineers, geologists and geophysicists new information on the methods and applications of geophysics as they apply to environmental and engineering problems. SAGEEP is the world’s premier conference on non-invasive investigation technology and research.
This year’s technical sessions included: Hydrogeophysics, Applications, New Technology and Research, LNAPL/DNAPL Characterization, Non-invasive Site Monitoring and Characterization, and Engineering and Mine Reclamation. Additionally, a short course was offered entitled “Introduction to Environmental Geophysics”.
The event was sponsored by the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS). EEGS was formed, along with other goals, to foster and encourage the use of geophysical techniques for environmental, engineering, and mining applications.

THE IMPACT OF THE ALBERTA ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT ACT REGULATIONS ON THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY
September 29, 1993 - The Marlborough Inn and Convention Centre, Calgary. The Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and its recently released regulations finally become law on September 1, 1993. This one-day conference is your chance to see how the new regulations will be interpreted and enforced in the context of the major environmental issues presently facing the petroleum industry. Speakers will discuss: abandonment of wellsites, oil spill reporting, management of hazardous petrochemical wastes, disclosure of confidential information to Alberta Environment, sulphur dioxide emissions, environmental assessment of new projects, and defences to corporate and personal environmental liability. Register today and learn how to take a proactive approach to environmental compliance in Alberta. For more information, contact INSIGHT Information, INC., (416) 777-1242.
FOCUS/DISCO PROCESSING ON IBM

ELECTROMAGNETIC METHODS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS: PROMISES AND PITFALLS
A special workshop in electromagnetic (EM) methods applied to environmental problems will be held in conjunction with the Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems (SAGEEP) to be held March 27-31, 1994, in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The format includes a tutorial and is illustrated with case histories. The focus of the workshop will be interpretational techniques and will emphasize the strengths and limitations of various EM methods. The all day workshop will be taught by leaders in academia and industry with the goal of bridging the gap between the research and the applied geophysicist, as well as increasing the use and effectiveness of EM methods.
All proceeds from this workshop will be donated to the Gerald W. Hahmann Memorial Trust for Teaching and Research in Applied Electrical Geophysics. For information, please call the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society at (303) 771-6101.
