The JGF & Mentorship Kick-Off took place on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 at Cenovus’ Odd Fellows Hall. This year’s event supported the Calgary Food Bank with attendees bringing non-perishable food items as an entrance fee – great work everyone! The event was a huge success, with a total of 111 attendees of all experience levels. This year was unique for a number of reasons; most notably this marked the first time the JGF and Mentorship Kick-Off have merged into a single event.

The theme for this year’s event was the Modern Geophysicist, featuring a panel discussion moderated by Karl Mome (Cenovus). Topics ranged from the tools in a modern geophysicists toolbox to creative communication and work life balance. The panel was conversational and comfortable, each of the panelists offering perspectives coloured by their own unique career paths. Brian Rex (Vice president of Geoscience at Tundra Oil & Gas), and Emily Duncan (Senior Geophysicist at Suncor) spoke from the perspective of 15+ year geophysicists, both having started their careers in the $10/boe days of the 90’s. Matt Ng (Geophysicist at Painted Pony) represented the intermediates and Jeff Calvert (Geophysicist-in-Training at Repsol) was a voice for new grad millennials. Following the panel discussion was a simple icebreaker activity, which led into a fun and relaxed night of networking. The purpose of this event was to offer takeaways on the future of the science for young and experienced geophysicists alike and to encourage honest discussion on the topic – in that, the event was a resounding success. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves as much as we did.

This event was a great success not only due to the generous donations from our sponsors, but also from the great volunteer effort of the EPP/JGF and Mentorship committees. A special thanks to Alex Shrake, Elizabeth Ramsey, Jordan Vandean, Karl Mome, Nathan Fester, Paul Hausmanis, Stephen Kotkas and Usman Shahid for their time and dedication.
